Longhand Note of President Harry S. Truman, ca. 1952. President's Secretary's Files - Longhand Notes.

[Undated, 1952]

The party of opposition, the minority party in this great Republic, the so called Republican party, the party that was the outgrowth of the Know Nothings, the Free Staters, the remnants of the dead Whig and Federalist Parties, one hundred years ago, has learned not one thing from the history of the United States a century ago or the history of the recent past.

When a great party has no issues on which it can appeal to the people, demagoguery, misrepresentation and character assassination become the "issues" of the candidates who are itching for power. Those candidates no matter whether they wear the cast off mantle of the greatest court in the history of the world or a coonskin cap of a former generation are desperate.

Your President hates crime and corruption as no one who ever sat in the Presidents Chair has hated it. Whenever a real wrong doer has been proven to be one, he has been discharged and prosecuted. But your president has never let a senatorial character assassin, a paid liar over the air, and there lots of them or a sewer press in any way influence his actions.

In this great day and age of ours we have prostitutes of the mind. This terrible disease originated in the Kremlin with Lenin, Stalin is his pupil and successor. Hearst, Howard and Knight, McCormick are his imitators as are certain Congressional Committees.

The press particularly the sabotage press, headed by Bertie McCormick, Hearst, Howard and Knight pay immense sums to mind prostitutes, as do certain special privilege believers in industry pay character assassins to speak over chain radio hook ups.

You'll notice, of course that these fact twisters never have appeared on television. One look at any one of them would tell you what they are.

From now on this is a fight to the finish, a fight for truth and decency and I'm going to spend the rest of my life chasing the liars off the air and making the kept press tell the truth and keeping the prostitutes of the mind off the editorial page.
