Longhand Note of President Harry S. Truman, June 21, 1951. President's Secretary's Files - Longhand Notes.
June 21, 1951
My day has been a strenuous one, as usual. Met the President of Ecuador yesterday afternoon at 3:00 P.M. Gave him the usual honors, 21 guns, inspection of the honor guard at the airport, parade in downtown Washington, stop at the Municipal Bldg., key to the City and response by the Ecuadorean President, continue on to Blair House, pictures on the front steps, tea in the garden, State Dinner at the Carlton, toasts, etc.
The President departed the Blair House at 9:20 A.M. today. I arose at 5 A.M. and tried to catch up with my reading, document signing, dictation etc. Almost made it.
Had a session with the Sec. of State and Sec. of Defense on a most important matter. Russians are tired of the Korean affair and want to quit! Well we'll see.
Had a most important session with the Chief of Staff. Ground, Navy Air and Gen. Bradley gave me a report on the lessons and the improvement as a result of Korean "War".
Had a speech session with the staff. Buttoned up a health speech for tomorrow (22nd) afternoon. Must write another Saturday for Monday delivery in Tennessee. Then another for July 4th at the Washington Monument celebrating 175th birthday of the Declaration of Independence. It is a Nation Wide Celebration. Ch. Justice Vinson is the National Chairman of a committee made up of the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, and the Floor Leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Looks as if it will be an epoch making affair. Hope it will hook Vinson for the next President!
MacArthur is now a "drug on the market" with the Senate Republicans. His Texas trip was a dud. And the witnesses by telling the truth have left the joint committee with a real headline for weeks.
The committees put out a most interesting report today on how they would turn the "bear" loose. The facts are too much for the opposition Democrats the Chiang Kai Chek Republicans. Too bad too bad. Their official mud slinger and Geobles [sic] liar also made a bad blunder when he attacked General Marshall. He is trying another Nazi Communist trick today by trying another lying attack on people already cleared earlier. What a low ebb for the G.O.P. Well we'll see.
