As Cold War tensions grew in the late 1940s and early 1950s, many Americans began to see danger around every corner. Real spies had given atomic secrets to the Soviet Union, and troubling events in Eastern Europe led to fears that the forces of democracy were losing to Soviet communism.

At home efforts were made to identify communists in government and the entertainment industry, sometimes destroying the careers of innocent victims in the process. While some spies did exist, the fear and paranoia far exceeded any real danger to the country. Movies, magazines, and books played on the paranoia, increasingly focusing on communism, espionage, and even space aliens intent on destroying the American way of life.

Spies  lies  paranoia  spies in the sky
