(Independence, Mo.) - In June 1998, more than half a million students nationwide participated in the National History Day competition. On Saturday, October 3 students and teachers from Greater Kansas City and Northwestern Missouri can learn about this national competition and pick up some great ideas on how to prepare for the 1999 competition.

The Truman Library and Museum is sponsoring a half day workshop on National History Day on October 3 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon. The workshop will be held in the Independence Room of the Truman Library, located at 500 West U.S. 24 Highway in Independence, Mo. The workshop is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Persons may register to attend by calling 816-268-8200 , Ext. 267.

The workshop will offer an explanation of this year's theme, along with research tips and resources, and examples of national winning entries. Featured speakers include Mark Adams of the Harry S. Truman Library, Debra Parsons of the Jackson County Historical Society and Gail Fines of the National Frontier Trails Center.

The National History Day competition encourages students in grades 6-12 to conduct and present historical research using original sources. Each year more than 500,000 students nationwide participate in the competition. This year's competition theme is "Science, Technology and Invention in History." The Harry S. Truman Library will host the Greater Kansas City (Missouri) History Day competition on Saturday, March 13, 1998. Winners of the regional competition will go on to compete in state and national competitions.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 18, and free for children 5 years and under.
