November 29 through - December 23, 2004.

Visit our Santa Claus December 11th and 18th

Independence, MO - The Truman Presidential Museum & Library will offer a Mitten Tree again this holiday season. Beginning November 29st and running through December 23, 2004 each visitor bringing a new or gently used pair of women's or children's mittens or gloves will receive $1.00 off admission, up to $2.00 off per person. Visitors can place their items on the official "mitten tree" located in the museum's main lobby. All donations will be given to Hope House Holiday Store in Independence where Hope House moms and children do their holiday shopping."

Founded in 1983, the mission of Hope House has been to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing safe refuge and supportive services that educate and empower women and their children. Hope House will advocate social change that protects and engenders a person's right to live a life free of abuse. Hope House provides safe shelter for 55 women and children, accessible through their 24-hour hotline (816-HOTLINE). Hope House is one of six shelters in Greater Kansas City and targets Eastern Jackson County. However, no one is turned away based on residence.

"We are excited to be offering this for Hope House for the third year. It is a valuable organization to the Independence and Kansas City Community," says Dr. Michael Devine, Director of the Truman Museum & Library. Harry Truman said in a speech broadcast from his home on Christmas Eve 1948, "I have come out here to Independence with my family to celebrate the great home festival. For of all the days of the year Christmas is the family day. Christmas began that way." "We take what President Truman said to heart and we want to make sure we do our part to ensure all families have a special day," said Dr. Devine.

Santa Claus will also be on hand for visitors Saturday December 11th and 18th in the East Lobby from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A visit to Santa is free with museum admission. Picture taking is welcomed.
