TRUMAN BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS HONOR
MAN AND HIS MISSION
- President Ford will Receive Award at Truman Library -
[Independence, Mo.] -- On May 8, 1998, the Truman Library and Museum, the Truman Library Institute, the City of Independence, and several area Truman-related organizations will celebrate the 114th birthday (May 8, 1884) of the area's most famous citizen, Harry S. Truman. Truman Birthday observances will honor Truman's memory and celebrate his many accomplishments.
Friday, May 8 - 114th Anniversary of Truman's Birthday.
- 9 a.m. - Annual Presidential wreathlaying at Truman's gravesite in the courtyard of the Truman Library and Museum.
- 9:30 a.m. - Representatives from 40 American Legion Posts in eight states will lay wreaths at the Truman gravesite during special ceremonies in the Library's courtyard.

Friday, May 8 - Former President Gerald R. Ford to Receive Harry S. Truman Public Service Award.
Each year, the City of Independence honors Harry Truman by presenting an award to an individual who best typifies the qualities of dedication, ability, honesty and integrity that distinguished Harry Truman. The 1998 Harry S. Truman Public Service honoree is President Gerald R. Ford. The award ceremony will be held on the front portico of the Truman Library, U.S. Highway 24 and Delaware, in Independence at 7 p.m. A public reception will follow in the Library's east wing. The event is free to the public.

Friday, May 8 - Opening of Truman Farm Home.
In conjunction with Harry Truman's birthday, the National Park Service will begin conducting free 30-minute ranger-guided tours of the Truman Farm Home in Grandview from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting May 8, the Truman Home will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through August 30. The Truman Farm is located approximately half-mile west of Highway 71 on Blue Ridge Boulevard. For more information call (816) 254-2720 during the week and (816) 254-9929 on weekends.
Friday, May 8 - Good Neighbor Award Presentation.
The Good Neighbor Award Foundation honors an outstanding American each year at a luncheon in celebration of Truman's birthday. This year's recipients are author Tom Clancy and retired four-star Gen. Frederick M. Franks, Jr., authors of Into the Storm.
Past honorees include former President Gerald R. Ford, David McCullough, former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater and Dr. Jonas Salk. This event is by invitation only. For information call (816) 561-2008.
The Truman Library and Museum is located at U.S. Highway 24 and Delaware in
Independence, Mo. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., Thursdays from 9 a. m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The museum is
closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Admission is $5 for adults, $4.50
for seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 18, and free for children 5 years and under.
