Description

Nine newsreels (not in production order) from Universal-International depicting news in the world of politics, sports, celebrities, science and human interest. Includes the following footage of President Truman: his meeting on Wake Island with General Douglas MacArthur, the 1951 State of the Union Address, and meeting the 1951 March of Dimes Campaign poster child at the White House.

24:40   MacArthur visits Korean front – Gen. Douglas MacArthur confers with field commanders on Korean front; Gen. Lawton Collins returns to Washington after a tour of the battle area and confers with Gen. MacArthur.
    The late Al Jolson is posthumously awarded the Medal of Merit for his work in entertaining the troops in Korea and Japan. Gen. George Marshall presents the award to Mr. Jolson’s son.

27:25   San Francisco – Kids get disaster tags – school children receive metal ID tags to wear that will identify them in case of war.

31:44   Retreat in Korea – Seoul falls to the Communists as United Nations forces (under command of Gen. Matthew Ridgway) are outnumbered; footage of aerial warfare and captured Russian aerial films.
33:44   Washington – “Ike Confident on Atlantic Pact” -- Gen. Eisenhower prepares to depart for Europe, to take over as commander of the unified defense forces there. He warns that the pact will only succeed if the United States and its allies make it succeed.
34:35   Germany – papers, paintings, documents and mementoes of Adolph Hitler found, valued at $200,000.
35:45   Sports – Orange Bowl – Clemson College defeats Miami University, 15-14
37:29   Sports – Sugar Bowl – Kentucky defeats Oklahoma “Sooners” 13-7

41:48   Korea – U. N. Forces Abandon Seoul – thousands flee Seoul, and engineers blast bridges and the frozen Han river. Scenes of flames and destruction shown.
43:00   Bear Mountain, New York – Sports – Track and Field -- Art Tokle wins the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial trophy over a field of 48. His jumps of 148 and 154 feet top the field by a wide margin.
44:25   New York City – Sports -- Boxing – The Annual Golden Gloves competition.

55:50   Oakland, California – Railroad Blood-Mobile – A special railroad car donated by Western Pacific railroad is being used to send vital blood to soldiers wounded in Korea.
56:30   Bremerton, Washington – Two carriers, the Essex and the Bon Homme Richard are re-commissioned to active duty. The Essex will be transporting atomic bomb carrying planes.
57:20   Chile – Logging industry in Chile expands.
58:20   U. S. Girds for Atomic Defense – footage of civilians in New York and other large cities as they prepare for possible atomic bomb attacks; New York begins recruiting volunteers for civilian defense.
