BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Grace Truman Summer was born on November 11, 1871. Her father, William Thomas Truman, was Harry S. Truman's uncle.

Mrs. Summer lived in Texas for most of her life. She was the mother of three sons, Harry, Arthur, and Homer Summer, and three daughters, Lucille Summer Goodman, Anna Summer Cage, and Adda Summer.

Grace Truman Summer died in Dallas, Texas in September 1955.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Included in the papers of Grace Truman Summer are correspondence, printed materials, family photographs, cards, and memorabilia mostly concerning her relationship with her cousin, Harry S. Truman.

The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters from Harry S. Truman to Grace Truman Summer. Most of these letters are typed and signed by President Truman, but a few are handwritten letters. Also included is the attached envelope for every letter. There are about seventy letters from Truman to his cousin in the collection, dating from 1945 to 1953. There are no letters from Grace Summer to President Truman. The rest of the correspondence in the collection mostly consists of letters from Grace Truman Summer to family members.

Also included in the collection are newspaper clipping and other printed materials. The clippings mostly concern the Truman and Summer families, and include obituaries of family members.

The Grace Truman Summer Papers also include approximately fifty family photographs. A large portion of these photographs are tintypes.

This collection also contains two dollar bills signed by President Harry S. Truman and two cards from Truman's campaign for Presiding Judge of Jackson County.
