ORGANIZATIONAL NOTE

The Jackson County (Missouri) Recorder's Office (now known as the Jackson County Recorder of Deeds Department) acts as the county's official record-keeper. It preserves records of deeds, mortgages, and other land transactions, as well as affidavits and wills. This selection of the office's records concerns Harry S. Truman, families to which he was related, and his political ally, Thomas J. Pendergast.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The records of the Jackson County (Missouri) Recorder's Office consist of legal and financial documents, including deeds, land grants, affidavits, and other documents, mostly concerning the transfer of ownership of land in Jackson County, Missouri. The documents relate to Harry S. Truman, Thomas J. Pendergast, and the Chiles, Colgan, Gates, Noland, and Wallace families. The collection is arranged in one series, a Subject File.

The bulk of the collection consists of deeds and land grants. Other materials include a bill of sale for the W. A. Ross Construction Company, which was partly owned by Thomas J. Pendergast; power of attorney forms; affidavits; and financial records pertaining to Harry S. Truman's tenure as presiding judge of the Jackson County Court and his campaigns for the U.S. Senate

The Truman Library also has the records of the Jackson County (Missouri) Election Board and the Independence (Missouri) School District that relate to Harry S. Truman and his family.
