BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Jere A. Nichols, a resident of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina, compiled two scrapbooks of press clippings relating to President Truman’s first eighteen months in office, which he subsequently donated to the Truman Library.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Jere A. Nichols consist of the contents of two scrapbooks containing various newspaper and magazine clippings related to Harry S. Truman’s life and Presidency from April 1945 to October 1946. The clippings from Time, the United States News, the Memphis Press-Scimitar, and other publications include articles pertaining to President Truman taking office, the Potsdam Conference, the atomic bomb, the end of World War II, President Truman’s support for Jewish immigration to Palestine, and labor issues. Many of the articles also include information about President Truman’s family and life before he became President.

In addition to news articles, the clippings in the collection contain numerous political cartoons featuring President Truman, and reproductions of photographs of his family and members of his Cabinet.
