COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Steve Neal contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, book drafts, photographs, publications, notes, and other materials related to the research and writing of several books about Harry S. Truman edited and written by Mr. Neal.

The collection is organized into one series, a Subject File. A majority of the materials in this series are newspaper and magazine clippings and book excerpts about specific people in the Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower presidential administrations. Mr. Neal gathered these as research materials for several books about this time period: Harry and Ike: The Partnership that Remade the Postwar World (published 2001); Eleanor and Harry: The Correspondence of Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman (published 2002); and Miracle of ’48: Harry Truman’s Major Campaign Speeches and Selected Whistlestops (published 2003). Most of the materials relate to the earliest book. The Subject File also contains handwritten drafts for most of Harry and Ike, as well as typewritten drafts and page proofs. This series also contains some original correspondence with Steve Neal and staff members of both the Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Libraries regarding Mr. Neal’s research and public programs that he delivered at the Truman Library. Mr. Neal also corresponded directly with Milton Eisenhower, and some of that correspondence is in the Subject File.

Mr. Neal made use of a number of collections at the Harry S. Truman Library during the course of his research for these books, including the Official File, President’s Personal File, and President’s Secretary’s Files of the Truman Papers.
