COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Sherman Minton contain printed and typed drafts of judicial opinions, memoranda, handwritten notes, letters, and other documents regarding certain cases that were brought before the U. S. Supreme Court during Minton's seven-year-tenure as an Associate Justice.

The collection is arranged chronologically by date of decision in each case. Justice Minton was assigned to write the majority opinion and deliver the judgment of the Court in almost all of these cases. In addition to typed and printed drafts of his opinions, the collection includes handwritten notes and memoranda from other Justices stating their positions in the cases or suggesting changes in Minton's drafts. A few letters from the public commenting on Court decisions are also included.

Filed at the end of the Minton Papers is an index to all the letters, memoranda, and notes written by other Supreme Court Justices that appear in the collection.

This collection only documents Minton's involvement in certain Supreme Court cases during his tenure as an Associate Justice. It does not contain material regarding other aspects of Minton's life or career in government.

More information about Sherman Minton can be found at the Truman Library in the papers of George D. Braden and the papers of Harry S. Truman.
