COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of George C. Marquis consist mainly of documents pertaining to the Masonic Lodge of Missouri and the involvement of Marquis and Harry S. Truman in Masonic organizations.

The papers are arranged in one series, a Subject File. Much of the collection consists of correspondence between Truman and Marquis during Truman’s Senate and Presidential years. Included are letters between the two men inquiring about families and happenings around Independence, Missouri; correspondence between Marquis and others concerning Truman; newspaper clippings covering trips made to the Kansas City area by Truman; and requests for guidance on different Masonic issues by both parties. The collection also contains programs of Masonic events, registers of those who attended such events, a birthday card to the President from the Independence Chamber of Commerce, and the program from the Truman homecoming dinner in 1953.

More information about Truman’s involvement in Masonry can be found in the Papers as U.S. Senator and Vice President  (Masonic File) and in the President’s Secretary’s Files (Personal File).
