COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Jane Lingo relate mostly to her friendship with Margaret Truman and the Truman family. The collection includes an address book, calendars, correspondence, invitations, diaries, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, programs, memorabilia, and other items. The papers are arranged alphabetically in a single series.

The collection includes an address book belonging to Jane Lingo's mother, Marie Tunstall Lingo, which contains information concerning Harry S. Truman and his family. The engagement calendars, dating from 1944 to 1971, detail Lingo's daily activities, some of which involve Margaret and the Truman family.

The collection contains a large amount of correspondence between Lingo and various people, including Margaret, Bess, and Harry Truman; Madge and May Wallace; and the U.S. Minister to Luxembourg, Perle Mesta. The invitations in the collection show that Lingo was asked to attend many events, mostly those involving the president, foreign ambassadors, and other members of Washington society.

Lingo recorded her thoughts and the events of each day during the summers of 1961, 1962, and 1963 in diaries. There is also a diary from the year 2005 in the collection.

The newspaper and magazine clippings date roughly from 1937 to 1975. They mostly concern Lingo and her friendship with Margaret. Other clippings refer to events involving Bess and Harry Truman.

The collection contains photocopies of photographs, including several portraits of Margaret and Bess Truman, photos of Jane Lingo and Harry Truman, photos of Bess and Harry, and photos of Margaret and Jane at the christening of the Pan-American Clipper. The original photographs have been transferred to the Truman Library's audiovisual collection.

The collection also includes programs from various events, including the 1948 Democratic National Convention, Harry Truman's Inauguration, other Presidential Inaugurations, the Jefferson-Jackson dinners of 1950 and 1952, the National Young Democratic Dinner of 1948, the President's Cup Regatta, the 1946 commencement at George Washington University, and Margaret's concerts. Other printed materials include a newsletter about the launching of USS Missouri in 1944, a newsletter about George Washington University alumni, and an article from the Pi Beta Phi magazine, Arrow.

The memorabilia includes tickets, several place cards with Lingo's name on them, receipts for flowers, and two posters of Harry Truman.

More information about Margaret Truman and her friends may be found in the papers of Margaret Truman Daniel and Clifton Daniel and the papers of Mary Shaw Branton.
