COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Bernard L. Gladieux Papers are comprised of correspondence, agendas, memoranda, reports, notes, and other items compiled during Gladieux's service as Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Commerce. The collection is comprised of one series, a Chronological File.

Bernard L. Gladieux was Executive Assistant to the Secretary from 1945 to 1950 and served three Secretaries during this period: Henry Wallace, W. Averell Harriman, and Charles Sawyer. The collection includes information on Wallace’s forced resignation from the Cabinet in 1946.

The reports mostly concern employee security: security clearances, summaries of loyalty cases, appeals of loyalty board decisions, and the security program at the National Bureau of Standards. Included in the papers are the transcripts of several hearings involving Commerce Department employees who appealed the decisions in their cases to the Department’s Loyalty Review Board.

The letters and memoranda are mostly between Gladieux and others, and concern appointments and other personnel matters.

Also included are notes for the Secretary of Commerce's meetings with President Truman, notes from meetings between Gladieux and the Secretary, and notes on a conference concerning the Federal Barge Line Strike.

Much of the remaining correspondence involves the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the Council of Economic Advisers, preparation of the budget and appropriations, and the replacement of temporary employees after the war.

The Truman Library has the papers of Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer. The Oberlin College Archives has a small collection of Bernard L. Gladieux Papers relating to his personal life and other aspects of his career.
