COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of John B. Dunlap consist of correspondence, daily diaries and appointment books, newspaper clippings, financial and personnel records, and photographs relating to Dunlap's life, military service, career as an official with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and subsequent career as a banker. The collection is organized into one series, a Subject File, which is arranged alphabetically.

The daily diaries and appointment books from before 1951 consist primarily of financial records of Dunlap's day to day expenses and travel, with related tax forms. Occasional references to his military service and vacations also appear. After 1951, the diaries and appointment books deal primarily with Dunlap's daily appointments.

The correspondence and newspaper clippings primarily deal with Dunlap's service as Commissioner of Internal Revenue from 1951-1952. During this time, Dunlap worked to clear the agency of corruption and favoritism. The articles detail Dunlap's removal of more than 160 agents from the Internal Revenue Bureau. Other articles describe the reorganization of the agency and its change of name from the Internal Revenue Bureau to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The photographs include portraits of Dunlap, photos of his swearing-in ceremony as Commissioner of Internal Revenue, and photos of him with other individuals.

More information on the Internal Revenue Bureau and Internal Revenue Service during the Truman administration can be found in the papers of Harry S Truman (Official File 21-D and President's Secretary's Files) and the papers of John W. Snyder.
