Description

Harry S. Truman recalls being elected Vice-President and the fact that he didn't want to be Vice-President. He then discusses his concerns for Mrs. Roosevelt and President Roosevelt. Mr. Truman also shares some first experiences as President following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Sound only.

0:18   Harry S. Truman discusses how he did not want to be vice-president. He was concerned about "having to take over an impossible job." He could see the wear and tear on the president. Mrs. Roosevelt had said, "I can't get him to eat."
1:15   Harry S. Truman recalls being elected vice-president . After President Franklin D. Roosevelt died, he said "I felt like a load of hay had been dumped on me." He explains that he was a farmer, and a load of hay could kill you if it dropped on you.
1:45   Mr. Truman discusses how he offered to help Mrs. Roosevelt, how he authorized the use of a plane to take her to Warm Springs, Georgia. This caused him to realize she was now an American citizen, requesting something from the President.
2:29   Harry S. Truman discusses going to his first cabinet meeting, at which he authorized the first meeting of the United Nations on April 25 in San Francisco.
3:01   Harry S. Truman discusses how Secretary Edward Stettinius told him of "the awful power that was in the making."
3:06   Harry S. Truman states this was the first time in our history to have a change of President during a war.
