Reel 1

0:00   Unidentified voice says "General Truman 136, take 1, sound 102."
General Ralph Truman, cousin of Harry S. Truman, responds to questions from Merle Miller. He met Harry S. Truman and his parents and siblings at Christmas, 1891, when he and his father visited the farm in Grandview, Missouri. His father and Harry's father were brothers. He also met Mrs. Solomon Young (Harriet Gregg Young) on this visit, a very handsome and gracious lady.
1:54   When asked about his opinion of Harry S. Truman upon meeting him, he says he always had a very high regard to Harry Truman and his family.
2:39   General Truman discusses Watt's Mill, built in 1819. It was a gathering place for the community. The owner took a "toll" – one-third of the grain being ground – for his pay. No cash changed hands. Harry Truman used to take grain there.
4:57   General Truman states his family had biscuits only when the preacher came. They had cornbread, which he still likes.
5:46   General Truman discusses serving in the Spanish-American War in Cuba. He declares that Teddy Roosevelt did not have a horse; he was not at San Juan Hill. Horses had been left at Tampa, Florida. This is a "matter of record."
7:05   General Truman discusses a train trip to Texas. He and Harry S. Truman took the train in September, 1901, to visit relatives. This was the first time Harry had been more than 30 miles from home. On this trip, a station agent gave their hotel manager a telegram announcing the assassination of President William McKinley.
