Description

This is an interview of Mary Jane Truman, sister of Harry S. Truman. In this interview by Merle Miller, she discusses her family, and the early days of the Truman presidency. She confirms that Harry Truman desired to rebuild their old home place in Grandview and establish his library on that location. Sound only.

0:12   Mary Jane Truman says her mother had a fine sense of humor, and that sometimes things she said to be humorous were mistaken to be serious.
0:49   Mary Jane and her mother went to the White House on Mother’s Day, 1945. It was reported that her mother refused to sleep in the Lincoln bed. "She did not refuse…she wasn’t asked." The Lincoln Suite was occupied and they were assigned the Rose Suite. They had a "most enjoyable time."
2:29   Mary Jane states that Harry met them at their plane and when her mother saw all the people, she said she wouldn't have come if she’d known all the people would be there. "She had a twinkle in her eye when she said it." Mary Jane thought her mother’s remarks were misinterpreted.
3:42   Mary Jane says her brother was a very studious boy, always reading a book or magazine. His teacher would say he was a good student, "and he still is."
4:30   Mary Jane Truman states she doesn't know a lot about the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails, but Harry could tell all about them because he was president of the National Trails Association.
5:29   Mary Jane confirms that Harry Truman had hoped to rebuild their old home place in Grandview. He had hoped to have his library on the old home place, "but things just didn’t work out that way." She stated that Independence had a lot of facilities that they just didn’t have at Grandview
