Description

This is an interview of Mary Jane Truman, sister of Harry S. Truman. In this interview by Merle Miller, Mary Jane discusses what life was like as a relative to a United States President. She talks about the security measures provided to her family by the secret service and her reaction to the news of the assassination attempt on her brother. Sound only.

0:00   Unidentified voice says something like "scene 99." Mary Jane Truman, sister of Harry S. Truman, answers questions from Merle Miller.
0:47   Mary Jane Truman states that when Harry became vice-president she didn't think of his becoming president, certainly not as soon as he did.
1:28   Mary Jane Truman claims her life in Grandview didn't change a great deal after her brother became president, although many people did want to interview her mother.
1:59   Mary Jane Truman says a secret service man was assigned to their home immediately after her brother became president. Eventually there were three on eight-hour shifts, and the same three men served all seven years her brother was in office, all fine men.
4:28   Mary Jane states her mother couldn't resist inviting everybody in, and that was one reason for the fence.
5:09   Mary Jane was told by the FBI about the assassination attempt on the president while she was in the Boot Heel area of Missouri on Eastern Star business. "I kind of went to pieces" she said. She was assured that her brother was safe. A secret service agent was assigned to her for the remainder of her trip.
