Reel 1

0:00   Unidentified voice says “27 – 23.” This recording consists of Harry S. Truman speaking and Ben Gradus asking questions and giving directions on the reading of narration. Harry S. Truman recalls working for a bank for $35.00 a week as a young man. Farmers deposited money when times were good, and withdrew money when times were bad. He learned the prosperity of the farmer was important for the country as a whole.
1:20   Mr. Truman claims he did everything he could while President to prevent another depression. We came through without disaster. There is some banter at this point between Mr. Gradus and Mr. Truman, with Mr. Gradus asking him to read narration about power on the farms, and Mr. Truman joking about outdoor toilets. Harry S. Truman reads narration that lobbyists tried everything they could to kill his plan for the farmer. Unidentified voice says “3709.” This was probably used in preparing MP81-16, “Where Tillage Begins.”
