(Senator Kilgore phoned to ask for this to discuss
aluminum stock piling)
10:15 am Congressman Edward J. Devitt, Minn.
Congressman Hale Boggs, Delaware
Congressman Richard M. Nixon, Calif.
Congressman Charles Kersten, Wis.
(Congressman Devitt phoned Mr. Connelly to ask if this
group of Republican Congressmen might come in and
discuss foreign affairs with the President)
10:30 am Congressman Hal Holmes, Washington
(Congressman Holmes wrote, asking if he and the two Washington
Senators (Senator Cain and Senator Magnuson later
cancelled out) might come in to present invitation
to the President from Ellensburg Rodeo Posse. This
invitation has been carried from Ellensburg to Yakima,
Washington by Pony Express in a replica of the
original Wells-Fargo pouch. It was then sent to
Washington, D. C. by Northwest Airlines plane, arriving
here June 30th.)
10:45 am Mr. Robert F. Wagner, Jr.
(Son of the Senator. The Senator's office asked for
this last week.)
11:00 am Congressman Michael J. Kirwan, Ohio
Mr. William F. Maag, Jr., Editor and Publisher,
Youngstown Vindicator, Youngstown, Ohio
(Congressman Kirwan wrote the President to ask if Mr. Maag,
whose papers supports the Administration, as it did
that of President Roosevelt, might come.)
11:15 am Honorable Albert V. Bryan, District Judge, U. S.
District Court, Eastern District of Virginia
(Wrote Mr. Connelly note to ask for this appointment)
11:30 am Mr. Sam Morris, Dem. National Committeeman, Arizona
Mr. William Turnbow
(Mr. Gael Sullivan asked Mr. Connelly to make this.
Wm. Turnbow is editor and radio commentator with Arizona
papers, who has been favorable to the President, parti-
cularly on reclamation. Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Morris
believe it will be very helpful for the President to
receive him.)
11:45 am Senator James E. Murray, Montana
Mr. V. J. Strong, Chairman of the Missouri Valley
Authority
(Senator Murray phoned Mr. Connelly to ask if they might
call on the President to discuss the Missouri Valley
Authority)
12:00 pm H. E. Dr. Guillermo Enciso Velloso, Ambassador of
Paraguay
(Newly appointed, presenting credentials. Papers late
arriving from the State Department)
12:15 pm Honorable William C. Foster, Under Secretary of Commerce
Honorable James E. Webb, Director, Bureau of the Budget
(Mr. Foster phoned Mr. Connelly yesterday, stating
he had just had meeting with Cabinet group considering
aviation matters. Mr. Foster wanted to make report
to the President and thought it would be helpful if
Mr. Webb also attended.)
12:45 pm Honorable Mark Gates, Mayor of the City of Santa Monica
Mr. Robert McRae
Mr. Theo. Stern
Mr. Sam Gates
(Honorable Mark Gates arrived bearing engraved message
of greetings to the President from Mr. Douglas of
Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc., and signed by the men
and women of the Santa Monica plant who worked on the
President's new plane "Special Mission" DC-6. This
plane was supposed to have reached Washington late
yesterday, piloted by Colonel Myers and with the
Mayor and group aboard.)
1:00 pm (Lunch)
3:30 pm H. E. Dr. Don Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros,
the Ambassador of Mexico
(The Ambassador came to the office and walked over
with the President to the movie theatre in the
White House, where they saw the film made by the
State Department.) (This film was of President
Aleman's visit to the United States.)
4:00 pm Honorable Dwight Griswold, Chairman, Greek-Turkish
Relief
