Scoring Guide for Evaluating Student Research

This scoring guide was designed for senior high school students doing research projects using primary sources. The scoring guide is based on a ratings scale that goes from 4 (the highest score) to 1 (the lowest score). Developed by Roy Keeland and Kathleen Vest

Consistently does all or most of the following:

-States the research problem in specific and concise terms
-Selects appropriate sources to support the stated research
-Adequately distinguish 5 between primary and secondary sources
-Accurately interprets information
-Draws appropriate conclusions based upon research
-Gives equal attention to diffenng points of view
-Uses a variety of sources in reaching conclusions
-Uses correct form in research writing with regard to format, bibliography, Footnotes, etc.
-Spent adequate time in research
-Resulting research document is well organized and easy to interpret and follow from beginning to conclusion

Does most or many of the following:

-Uses many inappropriate or redundant sources
-Shows lack of distinction between primary and secondary sources
-Misinterprets evidence
-Draws conclusions which are unsupported by documentation
-Presents only the evidence which supports a preconceived point of view
-Sources are of same or similar nature; little or no variety
-Uses faulty or inconsistent research writing form
-Inadequate time spent on research
-Resulting research document is fragmentary, poorly organized, and difficult to follow

-Uses too few sources to adequately support a conclusion
-Shows no distinction between primary and secondary sources
-Defends personal or preconceived ideas in spite of the evidence
-Ignores evidence to the contrary of a stated point of view
-Does not justify conclusions with research evidence
-Uses no acceptable or consistent form in research writing
-Inadequate time spent on research
-Resulting research document is fragmentary, poorly organized, and difficult to follow
