Return to Truman's Letters to Margaret Folder

Washington D.C.
Dec 10, 1936

My dear Daughter:

It was a very, very great pleasure for your dad to get such a nice letter.

I am glad to know what mother wants for Christmas, and I'll look around down town and see what I can see. I'll also see if I can find you a pretty piece of music. I'd like very much to see that red dress with puff sleeves and everything. Bud & Mrs. Bud are all right and so are Mr & Mrs Messall. Catherine and the other girls are too. Mildred is on her vacation and I haven't seen her. I hope I can go to another Philharmonic with you. That one we went to was most entertaining.

I am glad you made so many E's. Your mamma made lots of 100's when she was your age and 100's were E's then. I am sorry you don't like geography. It is necessary to know if you expect to talk intelligently to educated people and you'll certainly have to do that. I stopped at a filling station coming over here and a young man in the station wanted to know of me if I had to go all the way to Washi ngton in order to turn off for Missouri. He thought Missouri was south of Washington and that I was going home. You don't want to be in that state do you? It seems hard now but some day when you get interested in history you'll want a clear idea of jus t where all those interesting places are or have been and then you'll be glad you studied geography.

It is too bad about King Edward. I had hoped he would keep his throne and assume his responsibility after going to the point of the succession. Now if he'd met some beautiful young commoner when he was in his twenties and had decided to give up the crown for her I'd have been 100% for him. But he is forty two and has had many a romance as has his Mrs.Simpson. I'd have done it for your mamma at twenty five and would yet because she is my only sweetheart and I'm hers. I'm not no. (number) three or no. (number) fifty. Ponder on that. Get more E's. Kiss your mamma and write your dad.

Love by the carload,

Daddy
