Return to Truman's Letters to Margaret Folder Camp Riley, Kansas
July 20, 1932

Dear Daughter :

Your fine letter came this morning and your dad was surely glad to get it. I do wish you and mother were here, in spite of the cannon. A little boy almost your age came out to the firing point yesterday and when the big guns went off he almost climbed the flag pole. I think he was more scared then you'd have been. Someday I hope you won't mind them and will come and watch your daddy shoot and see how it is done.

I am glad you are practicing because I would be disappointed if someone should say that the reason Margaret Truman can't play is because her daddy is trying to teach her and he doesn't know how. I want you to know how but I can't do it for you. You have to work for yourself if you expect to accomplish anything and I surely want you to be as good as the best in everything you undertake except smoking cigarettes, and I hope you'll never do that. I've never yet seen a smoking woman that I'd have around me for a minute.

I am glad you are walking everywhere and I hope you'll be entirely well when I get home next Sunday.

Kiss your mamma for me and tell her I still look for letters.

Your loving Dad

Here are two more pictures of your dad.

Note: Truman served Reserve Officer duty in the summers of the 1920's and 30's at Fort Riley, Kansas.
