President
Bill Clinton bestows the Presidential Medal of Freedom on
Fred Korematsu, the plaintiff in Korematsu vs. United
States (1944), in which the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality
of the governments removal of people of Japanese descent
from the Pacific Coast military zone. Korematsus conviction
had been overturned in 1984 because the governments
evidence was determined to be tainted.
