Student Activities:
- Before reading the above material to your students have them tell you what they think the expression "The buck stops here" means. You may wish to have them research the origin and meaning of the phrase.
- After hearing or reading the above information and discussing it as a group, have students conduct research (alone or in small groups) to find examples of important decisions President Truman made. Did the public agree with him at the time? Why or why not? Has public opinion changed since then? Why or why not? Where else had "the buck" been before it stopped at his desk? Who helped Truman make important decisions?
- Discuss -- What is a motto? Is it different than a "slogan"?
Discuss mottoes that might represent the way other Presidents have acted in office. Have students compose mottoes to put on their own desks. (Encourage the expression of positive attitudes.)
