Initial investigation:
In February of 1948, Truman asked a committee of architects and engineers to conduct an investigation of the structural condition of the White House. The committee was immediately concerned with the serious deterioration of the structure and with the evident fire hazards. They recommended a thorough examination of the entire structure.
In May of 1948, Congress voted in favor of the appropriation of $50,000 for the in-depth investigation, and a survey committee was formed. By November, the committee was so concerned about the dangerous conditions in the White House that they decided that when the President returned from Missouri, where he had gone to vote, he should move across the street to the Blair House until renovations were completed.
