Pearl Harbor & Atomic Bomb

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack came without warning and more than 2,800 Americans were killed. Eight battleships were sunk or damaged. Two and a half hours after the attack, Japan declared war on the United States and Great Britain.

Editor's note: At this time Truman was a United States Senator)

Although the major battles had been lost, Japan would not stop fighting. In an effort to stop the loss of American lives, President Truman made an important decision. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an Atomic bomb, code named Little Boy, on Hiroshima, Japan. However, Japan still would not surrender. Three days later, the United States dropped another bomb, called Fat Man, on Nagasaki. Thousands of people were killed in a flash.
