Bess's Family

Bess's grandfather George Porterfield Gates was a co-founder of a successful Independence flour mill. He built the Gates's house at 219 Delaware Street in Independence. After her father died, Bess, her mother, and her three brothers moved into the house. Bess lived in the house for the remainder of her life.
