![]() November 24, 1998 Harry & his friend, Eddie
Eddie Jacobsen was one of Harry's closest friends. They formed a business partnership after the First World War. However, due to Truman's mother-in-law's view on socializing with Jews, Eddie was never invited to dinner at the *Wallace (Truman) home in Independence.

* At this point in Truman's life, Harry and Bess lived with Bess's mother ( Madge Gates Wallace) in her grandparents' home. Bess's grandfather, George Porterfield Gates, died in 1918 and her grandmother (Elizabeth Gates) spent much of her time in Colorado with her brother's family in the latter years before her death. Mrs. Wallace owned the home (1924) after her mother's death, although Harry paid most of the bills. To keep peace in the family, Harry did not contradict his mother-in-law.
