![]() October 29, 1998 Bravery to Make Important DecisionsThere were many firsts that Truman got to experience while President. He was the first president to appear on television. He remodeled the White House for the first time, including a $10,000 balcony, since it was rebuilt after the War of 1812. He created NATO, recognized Israel as a sovereign state, and aided countries in Europe financially with the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine after World War II. He also made the executive decision to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan to end the war with them. Truman had once said, "All my life, whenever it comes to me to make a decision, I make it and forget about it. As President of the United States, you never have time to stop. You've got to keep going because there's always a decision ahead of you that you've got to make, and you don't want to look back. If you make a mistake in one of those decisions, correct it by another decision and go ahead. That's all you can do."
