U.S.S. WILLIAMSBURG
President's Truman Yacht, August 1946

Jerry Haley e-mailed us that he was a crew-member of the U.S.S. Williamsburg. President Truman and his family would sometimes on the weekend go down the river to Hampton Roads, VA, and anchor off shore. Every time they passed Mt. Vemon, George Washington's home, all off duty sailors fell out on deck, and saluted as they passed. When the President was aboard, he always joined in honoring the man who held his office first.

One time President Truman asked Mr. Haley to do some speed changes so he could see how it was done. He explained to him that he could not change speed without orders from the Bridge, and the Bridge would have to get pen-nission from our escort Destroyers. His only reply was "Tell them!" He did and in two minutes the Bridge ordered the first of several speed changes. The President watched closely as he went through the complicated routine that had taken Mr. Haley a week to learn. After the first two, he said, "Let me try." He informed the Bridge that "Man" was on the throttles and to run the same speed changes again. They did, and he executed them perfectly.
