![]() January 20, 1999 Interview : Thoughts of 1948 Interviews are a great way to learn about life in the past. I chose to interview my great grandmother for my article. My grandmother was teaching 5th and 6th grade at the LaVerne Public Schools. First, I asked my grandmother who she voted for in 1948. She voted for Harry Truman, because she thought he was a sincere man, wanted peace for the world and wanted the best for the common man.
She thought Truman was a good president who became a world leader with great power and he had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. She didn't agree with his decision to drop the atomic bomb, because she was afraid of war and was concerned about what might happen because of the dropping of the bomb.
I asked my great grandmother if she thought Bess Truman was influential in Truman's decision making. She seemed to think that Bess let Truman and his advisors make all the decisions while Harry was President.
I enjoyed listening to my great grandmother's thoughts about life in 1948. Someday, my grandchildren may interview me about life in 1998.
