High School Internship Program

The Truman Presidential Museum & Library, invites high school students aged 16 or older to submit applications for our volunteer summer internship program.

Imagine being in a place saturated with history. A place where history doesn’t just sit on a dusty shelf waiting to be discovered, but where it actually lives and breathes, where it keeps an office, and attracts interest from people all over the world. Imagine this place being open to you — open for you to discover and learn about history first-hand.

A Unique Opportunity

Your commitment would be:

To provide 50 hours as an intern during the months of June. We can be very flexible and accommodate any plans you have for family vacations, summer job, etc.

Available working hours would be from 10am - 2pm or 11am - 3pm, Monday through Friday.

How to apply:
A limited number of students can be accepted into this summer program. Applications are available through the Volunteer and Intern Office and when submitted, need to be accompanied by:

  • a writing sample (approximately 5 pages in length),
  • two teacher references, and
  • a current transcript.

All material must be submitted by May 1 and after review by Truman Library staff, you may be contacted for an interview. Once accepted into the summer program, appropriate training will be provided.

Internship Requirements:

• 16 years of age or older
• 2.5 grade point average or higher
• Computer skills helpful
• Reliable, responsible, dependable
• Able to work independently
• Able to accept supervision
• Interest in history
• Good communication skills

As an intern, you could work in our archives facility where historical documents relating to the Truman era are preserved and made available for researchers from around the world. The archives is the “Library” part of the Truman Museum & Library.
