Country Club Plaza. The nation's first shopping center, the 55-acre Spanish-style Country Club Plaza is America's oldest shopping center, constructed in an ambiance of Spanish architecture. Built in 1922, the Plaza is best known for its pastel-colored tile-roofed buildings, shops (including Saks Fifth Avenue, Brooks Brothers and Gucci), sparkling fountains, Italian statuary, outstanding restaurants, romantic horse-drawn carriages and elegant hotels. At Christmas time the Plaza becomes a fairyland of color; the holiday tradition of outlining buildings in multicolored lights began here in 1925. There are over 60 miles of Christmas lights outlineing the 14-block district. The Plaza is also the setting for art fairs, the city's Easter parade and summertime concerts in the park. To catch a closer look at the statues and fountains, take a self-guided walking art tour of the Plaza or catch a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Hours: 8am-5pm One of only 12 in the country, the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank serves as the bank to all other banks. Completely restored, the lobby and mezzanine of this original 1921 structure provides a home for a permanent exhibit, which explains the various roles of the Reserve, as well as traveling art collections featured in the Fine Art Gallery. Visitors may also view the check and cash operating areas of the bank.

Arabia Steamboat Museum, 400 Grand Ave., KCMO 64198. More than 200 tons of buried treasure recovered from the sunken 1856 steamboat Arabia is displayed.
