County Hospital
When
he became county judge, Truman saw that the county's home for the aged could
not adequately address the health needs of its residents. In 1928, Jackson
County voters approved a bond issue to build a county hospital. It was completed
in 1930. "The hospital is up at a less cost than any similar institution,"
Truman wrote proudly. "...The per bed cost is one half the City's and
St. Luke's and any others you want to name." (Handwritten manuscript,
ca. 1930.)
County Hospital, located at Little Blue and Lee's Summit Roads about 16 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City, was named for Truman shortly after he died.
