Truman worked here for a few months when he was about 14 years old. He opened the store, mopped the floor, threw out the trash, dusted and polished the jugs and bottles, worked the fountain, and clerked. At the end of his first week on the job, Truman received three silver dollars. "It was the biggest thing that happened to me," he recalled, "and my father told me to save it for myself when I tried to give it to him on coming home that Saturday night." (Memoirs.)

The building in which Truman worked burned down in 1906. A new building was put up on essentially the same site and Clinton's Drugstore was reestablished in it. The photograph above shows the interior of the store in 1902, presumably looking much as it did when Truman worked there.
