Harry
S. Truman birthday week offers an exciting array of events at the
Truman Presidential Museum & Library.
Independence, Mo.
- The 121st Birthday of President Harry S. Truman will be celebrated in
style this week at the Truman Presidential Museum & Library. Highlights
include $1 admission on May 7th, staff presentations, the Truman Public
Service Award, Brian Burnes book signing, wreath layings and Mothers receive
admission on May 8th, the President's Birthday.
Friday, May 6,
7:00 p.m. Truman Presidential Museum & Library Auditorium
The city of Independence presents its Community Service Award to long-time
Kansas City journalist Walt Bodine. With more than 50 years in the media,
Bodine is affectionately known as Kansas City's dean of broadcasting.
Bodine has received numerous awards including the Kansas City Spirit Award
in 1987, recognizing him as the "voice of the people" and "our
community conscience." More recently Bodine was the recipient of
the Bishop John J. Sullivan Award for Communications. A reception follows.
Saturday, May 7,
2:00 p.m. "The Unscripted Harry Truman"
A special film presentation of rare and newly released footage of President
Truman and others filmed during the making of his award-winning television
series "Decision: The Conflicts of Harry S. Truman." Commentary
will be offered by Truman Library Deputy Director Scott Roley and Brian
Burnes, Kansas City Star report and author of "Harry Truman: His
Life and Times." A book signing will follow.

Truman Days, May 7 - May 8
$1 admission to the Truman Presidential Museum & Library all day May
7th as well as 1859 Jail and Marshal's Home, the Truman Home, Vaile Mansion,
National Frontier Trails Museum, Bingham-Waggoner Estate, and the Puppetry
Arts Institute.
Cake served on the square by "Harry" from 11:30 -1:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 8
- Harry S. Truman's 121st Birthday. Mothers receive free admission all
day
The Museum will open at 8:30 a.m.
9:30 a.m. - American Legion Pilgrimage, Wreath Laying Ceremony. Representatives
of over fifty American Legion posts will observe President Truman's birthday
by laying wreaths at his gravesite. The ceremonies will include a color
guard procession and a memorial address. Museum visitors may observe from
the Courtyard or the Legacy Gallery.
A Truman impersonator will visit with guests from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and
free birthday cake and punch will be served at 1:30 p.m.
Unless otherwise noted,
programs are free with Museum admission.
Friday, May 6th
Sandra Day O'Connor, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will
receive the 2005 Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award.
O'Connor will accept the award during a noon luncheon May 6 at the Muehlebach
Tower of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown. The award has been given by
the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation every year since 1973
on or about May 8, the anniversary of Harry Truman's birth. For details
