Project Background
The Truman Presidential Museum & Library and the
Jackson County Historical
Society invite everyone to participate in their Harry S. Truman Memories Project. This project
is undertaken in conjunction with the recent opening of the Truman Museum's new permanent exhibition, Harry S.
Truman: His Life and Times.
Harry S. Truman lived most of his life in Jackson County, and considered it his home even when he served as U.S. Senator, Vice President, and President of the
United States.
The people of Jackson County were his friends and neighbors, and many people still remember their acquaintance with him. Many of these memories of Harry S. Truman-as well
as the
letters, photographs, films, and objects that help to record some of the memories-are precious and should be preserved as part of the historical record.
How to Participate
If you had a memorable encounter with Harry S. Truman, if you took a good photograph or shot some film of him, if he sent you
some letters or an important gift-or if you came into possession of some photographs or films of him, letters written by him, or objects relating to him-you should
consider participating in this project by submitting a record of your memory, the letters you received, or the photograph, film, or object to the Truman Presidential
Museum & Library.
Entries for the project will be accepted from April 1 to June 15. They can be in either of two categories:
- Personal accounts of important or interesting encounters with Harry S. Truman, recorded in writing or by electronic means (audiotape, videotape, etc.).
- Letters from Harry S. Truman; photographs or films showing him; or objects given by or relating to him. (Either original materials or copies may be
submitted).
Photographs of objects may be submitted. Objects or photographs of objects should always be accompanied by descriptive information, in either written or oral history
form. Multiple submissions and submissions in both categories are welcome. Please do not submit newspaper or magazine articles or other similar published
items.
Original materials (letters, photographs, films) will be returned; copies
of materials, audiotapes, videotapes, and other recording media will not
be returned.
If you have a submission, please print out and fill in this Entry Form and send it to:
The Harry S. Truman Memories Project, Truman Presidential Museum & Library, 500 West U.S. Highway 24, Independence, MO 64050.
If you have questions, or for additional information, please contact the Truman Library at 816-268-8387.
Email entries without attached images as well as
email entries with attached images will also be
accepted. Note on the number of attached images: If you are going to submit your entry via the web and attach images to your email submission, please limit
the number of attached images to three photographs. If you are submitting more than three photographs, please submit by regular mail rather than email.
Judging of Entries
A Committee of Judges will select especially worthy entries in
each of the two categories. Selected entries will be exhibited in the
Truman Museum during the summer.
The Truman Presidential Museum & Library and the Jackson County Historical Society may invite some participants to donate their entries (or copies of them made by
the Truman Museum) to their permanent collections. |
