Ark of the Torah ScrollsArk

In October 1949, Israeli President Chaim Weizmann sent President Truman this ornate Ark to house the Torah scrolls given to the President earlier.

The Ark is made of copper with silver ornamentation. It was designed and constructed by Israeli artist Yehuda Wolpert and his assistants at the Bezalel School for Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem.

The Ark is topped by a crown of silver Hebrew letters forming the following passage from Exodus 3:2:

And he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Open Ark The silver letters encircling the Ark are taken from Psalm 19: 7-9:

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Inside the left half of the door is an additional quotation from Deuteronomy, Chapter 8: 7-9.
