In 2005 the Harry S. Truman Library Institute established the Truman Medal for Economic Policy.

The first recipient of the award was Alan Greenspan in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the formation of economic policy. The award was presented during a luncheon on October 26, 2005 at the Marriott Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City.

The Truman Medal for Economic Policy has been established to provide a forum to recognize exceptional economic policy contributions. The award's name reflects on the creation of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Harry S. Truman. The CEA was formed under the Employment Act of 1946 to provide analysis and advice related to national and international economic policy issues.

The Truman Medal organizing committee consists of: The Harry S. Truman Library Institute; The Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri at Kansas City; The Economic Club of Kansas City; and The Missouri Council on Economic Education.

The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is one of twelve Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.
