COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Myron Taylor consist mainly of documents related to Taylor's position as Personal Representative of the President to Pope Pius XII from 1939-1950 and as Personal Representative of the President on Special Missions from 1950-1952. The documents are dated from 1932-1953. The folders for the most part are arranged chronologically by year in a single Subject File.

The collection is made up mainly of bound volumes, presumably arranged by Taylor, containing his official correspondence. Also included are newspaper articles, memoranda of conversation, photographs, and other items documenting Taylor's diplomatic service during these years. Another volume contains copies of correspondence that Taylor had with President Truman and Pope Pius XII, reports from Taylor to Truman discussing meetings he held with the Pope, and direct correspondence between the President and the Pope from 1945 to 1950. There is also a copy of remarks made at a meeting in 1932 arranged by Taylor to promote the Share-The-Work Movement while he was an executive at U.S. Steel.

The papers include information about refugees, mostly Jewish, from Europe after WWII. There are memorandums about discussions Taylor had with the Pope and Protestant Clergymen about this issue and about the work of the International Refugee Organization. There are also reports on the numbers of Jewish immigrants and the absorptive capacity of Palestine.

Taylor spent much of his time going on diplomatic trips around Europe investigating the religious and political situations. There is documentation of these trips, including letters and memorandums between Taylor and officials of those countries.

There are documents from Taylor's position as Personal Representative of the President on Special Missions from 1950-1952. In this position, Taylor investigated several Jewish issues by traveling as a representative for the President. In this volume, there is information about prominent rabbis and the Jewish situations in other countries.

Other related materials at the Truman Library can be found in such collections as the Harry S. Truman Papers (Confidential File and President's Secretary's Files) and the J. Graham Parsons Papers. Another collection of Taylor Papers documenting his diplomatic career prior to the Truman Presidency is located at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library.
