COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Greta Kempton document the life and career of the woman who won fame during the Truman administration as "America's Court Painter." With her portraits of President Truman, his family, and members of his Cabinet, Greta Kempton established herself as one of the nation's most prominent portrait painters.

A native of Vienna, Kempton studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts before emigrating to the United States during the 1920s. She attended the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York, and soon began earning commissions as a portrait painter. Her style was reminiscent of Rembrandt, Rubens, and other European masters. By the 1940s, she had compiled an impressive list of subjects, including the families of Hollywood notables and prominent residents of New Orleans, where she lived with her then- husband, the businessman Ambrose McNamara. Kempton became well-known in Washington following the unveiling in 1947 of her portrait of Drucie Snyder, the daughter of Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder. Through Snyder, Kempton gained introductions to other high officials of the Truman administration. Later in 1947, she painted a portrait of Drucie Snyder's friend, Margaret Truman, and was also commissioned to paint a portrait of the President himself--the first of five Kempton paintings for which Mr. Truman posed. This became the official White House portrait of President Truman, and was widely used in his 1948 reelection campaign.

In the years that followed, Kempton painted additional portraits of President Truman, Mrs. Truman, their daughter Margaret, and several Truman administration officials. In the later stages of her career, she experimented with different styles and subjects, and remained active as a painter into her eighties. Her works are in the collections of the White House, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Harry S. Truman Library, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, the National Portrait Gallery, and a number of other institutions. Kempton died in New York City in 1991. She left the bulk of her estate, including her papers, to the Harry S. Truman Library Institute for National and International Affairs. In 1994, the Institute donated Kempton's papers to the Harry S. Truman Library.

The papers of Greta Kempton include six series: a Subject File, a Family Correspondence File, a Harry S. Truman File, a Financial and Legal Affairs File, a Printed Materials File, and an Oversize File.

The Subject File contains extensive personal correspondence from Kempton's friends, along with material documenting her career as an artist, her social life, and her financial affairs. There are files in this series on several of the people who posed for Kempton's best-known portraits: John Snyder and his family; Senator Carter Glass of Virginia and his family; Postmaster General Robert Hannegan; Postmaster General Jesse Donaldson; Secretary of the Interior Julius Krug; Secretary of the Air Force Stuart Symington; and His Eminence Samuel Cardinal Stritch of Chicago. These files contain a substantial body of correspondence, particularly with John and Drucie Snyder. Also included in the Subject File is information concerning exhibitions of Kempton's work and her memberships in a variety of organizations. Two folders contain contracts for portraits painted by Kempton during the early stages of her career, while the folders entitled "Sketchbooks" and "Sketches" include some of her original drawings. The Subject File is arranged alphabetically.

The Family Correspondence File mostly consists of letters and postcards to Kempton from her daughter Daisy Dickson and her grandson Albert d'Ossche, with related materials. The bulk of the correspondence in the series dates from 1970 to 1991. The Family Correspondence File is arranged in chronological order.

The Harry S. Truman File contains correspondence, printed materials, and other items documenting Kempton's relations with President Truman and the Harry S. Truman Library. Much of this material concerns a 1987 exhibition of Kempton's work at the Library. The folder entitled "Oral History Interview" contains the transcript of an interview which Kempton gave in conjunction with the exhibition, along with related correspondence. The transcript of this interview is also in the Library's Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection (MHDC) #623. Also included in the series is a deed of gift for Kempton's donation of a small collection of her papers to the Truman Library in 1987. This material, originally filed as MHDC #611, has now been transferred to the Subject File and the Harry S. Truman File of the Kempton papers. The Harry S. Truman File includes a small amount of correspondence with the President and Mrs. Truman, Margaret Truman, and Truman administration officials. The folder titles in this series, which were provided by the archivist who processed the collection, are arranged in alphabetical order.

The Financial and Legal Affairs File contains a variety of material relating to Kempton's career as an artist and to her investments. The series includes appraisals of the monetary value of Kempton's paintings, mostly performed between 1976 and 1981 by the Equitable Appraisal Company, along with related correspondence. The appraisals are organized in a chronological-numerical sequence, based on numbers assigned by the appraiser. The series also includes Kempton's checkbooks for the period from October 1971 to September 1991, and material relating to Kempton's apartment in Manhattan. The series is arranged in alphabetical order.

The Printed Materials File features a large collection of newspaper clippings, exhibit brochures, periodicals, and other publications reflecting the development of Kempton's career as a painter and her interest in the work of other artists. Especially prominent in the series are published materials featuring Kempton's most famous Truman portraits--the official White House portrait (1947), the first Margaret Truman portrait (1947), the Masonic portrait of the President (1949), and the First Lady's portrait (1952). The series also contains a number of items relating to Truman and the 1948 election, including campaign literature, Democratic party materials, and a 1949 Inaugural program. The series is arranged alphabetically.

The Oversize File includes certificates, reproductions of paintings, and a collection of scrapbooks documenting Kempton's career from approximately 1939 to 1984. The series is arranged in an approximate chronological order.

More information about Greta Kempton can be found in other collections at the Truman Library: the Greta Kempton oral history interview conducted by the Truman Library; Truman Presidential Papers (Official File 1446) and Post-Presidential Papers (General Correspondence File and Outgoing Correspondence File); John W. Snyder Papers; and Snyder's oral history interview (Oral History Interview #266). The Truman Library's museum collection includes several of Kempton's paintings.
