COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
The papers of Dwight P. Griswold document his service as Chief of the
American Mission for Aid to Greece from June 14, 1947 through September
15, 1948. The collection includes correspondence with State Department
officials and others, and briefing papers, press releases, reports (including
five quarterly reports concerning U.S. aid to Greece and Turkey that the
Department of State submitted to Congress in 1947 and 1948), newspaper
clippings and photographs relating to the mission. The American Mission
for Aid to Greece was organized in May and June of 1947 to oversee the
administration of a program of assistance for Greece and Turkey according
to the provision of the so-called Truman Doctrine (Public Law 75, 80th
Congress) and the implementing regulations prescribed by Executive Oder
9857.
The collection is divided into four series. The Correspondence File
includes, most importantly, correspondence with Secretary of State George
Marshall and other State Department officials concerning the mission of
AMAG. Of particular importance is a letter from Secretary of State George
C. Marshall to Dwight P. Griswold, not dated but certainly written in
late June of 1947, which describes Griswold's charge and the scope of
his authority as Chief of the American Mission for Aid to Greece. The
series also includes several reports and speeches that describe AMAG's
accomplishments in Greece. The Reports File contains five quarterly reports
concerning U.S. assistance to Greece and Turkey that the Department of
State submitted to Congress for the periods ending September 30, 1947
through September 30, 1948. The Scrapbook File contains newspaper clippings,
personal and social correspondence, and invitations and other such items
relating to the ceremonial side of Griswold's work. The Photograph File
contains photocopies of photographs from two photograph albums and a scrapbook.
The original photographs have been transferred to the audiovisual collection.
The following collections in the Truman Library's holdings contain material
relating to American assistance to Greece and Turkey: the papers of Harry
S. Truman (OF206 - Greece; President's Secretary's
File - Subject File), Clark
M. Clifford, George M. Elsey, Joseph
M. Jones, Paul A. Porter, Paul
R. Porter, Francis Lincoln, George
E. Phillies and Harry N. Howard.
A large collection of papers of Dwight P. Griswold is in the custody
of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
