COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Paul W. Baade Papers include correspondence, maps, certificates, newspaper and magazine clippings, photos, and publications. The collection is arranged alphabetically in a single series.

Major General Baade's distinguished military career is reflected in the decorations he received for his service during World War II, such as the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Service Medal. Included in the collection are certificates for these awards, and for other promotions and honors he received during his career.

The correspondence consists primarily of letters congratulating Baade on his promotion to Brigadier General in 1941 and messages relating to the activities of the 35th Division during World War II.

Also in the collection are maps for military use in Europe, Army newsletters, a tribute to the 35th Division that Senator Harry S. Truman placed in the Congressional Record, publications regarding the history of the 35th Division, and a West Point alumni periodical featuring Baade's obituary. The contents of a large scrapbook of photographs, press clippings, and military correspondence pertaining to Baade's World War II service are also included.

More information about the 35th Division can be found at the Truman Library in the Records of the 35th Division Association and in the Papers of Ralph E. Truman, a cousin of Harry S. Truman.
