Summary:
The President made his fifth trip to Key West from November 7-21, 1948, in
order to relax after several strenuous weeks of campaigning which
culminated in his successful reelection to the Presidency. A few days
after his arrival in Key West, Mrs. Truman and Margaret arrived, making
their first visit to Key West. The President received numerous visitors
while on this trip, including the Senator and Congressman representing Key
West, the Governor-elect of Florida, a group from the American Legion, and
the American Ambassador to Cuba, among others. Truman and his party also
visited the Fort Jefferson National Park on Dry Tortugas Island. Dr.
Samuel Mudd, the doctor who set the broken leg of Lincoln's assassin, John
Wilkes Booth, had been held prisoner at the fort.
