![]() Log of the President's [First] Vacation Trip to Key West, Florida, November 17-23, 1946 |
Summary: This is the log of the President’s Vacation of November 17-23, 1946, his first visit to Key West. As he did each trip, Truman's first act upon arriving at the Submarine Base in Key West was to call Mrs. Truman and ensure her of his safe arrival. Along with his usual vacation activities of swimming, fishing, and lounging in the sun, Truman boarded a submarine and went down 450 feet underwater. This submarine was originally a German U-boat, but was surrendered to the British and subsequently retained by the United States. Truman also made a brief appearance at an enlisted man’s dance on the base. |
