Event Photographs

In 1952 President Truman attended the Army-Navy football game at Municipal Stadium, Philadephia, Pennsylvania. As usual, Abbie Rowe was there to take photos of Mr. Truman. Photo by Navy photographer Paul Begley, AFC.From 1941 through 1967, Abbie Rowe photographed hundreds of events including official ceremonies, the visits of foreign dignitaries, the enactment of important legislation, and many other state functions both large and small.

He covered history-making events like the funerals of Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy, Harry Truman's announcement of the surrender of Japan that ended World War II, and Presidential Inaugurations.

But he also covered smaller ceremonies as well - Presidents pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, welcoming groups of Girl Scouts, accepting small gifts from admirers, and performing countless little ceremonial functions that are part of the pomp and symbolism of the Presidency. One example of these smaller events is this Abbie Rowe photo of a group of artists attempting to best each other in capturing the best free-hand likeness of President Truman.
