The papers of Mary (May) Southern Wallace mainly consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, printed materials, and other items related to Wallace’s connections with the Truman family. A significant portion of this collection consists of newspaper articles regarding Bess Truman’s passing and funeral, and other articles chronicling the life and times of Harry S. Truman.

Also in the collection are photographs of the Wallace and Truman families and two scrapbooks. One scrapbook is comprised of newspaper clippings from Margaret Truman’s wedding. The second scrapbook contains poems that Wallace collected from various printed sources over a period of several decades. Many of the poems were by her sister, Caroline Southern Carnes.

The collection includes correspondence and handwritten notes dating between 1945 and 1988. Most of the correspondence is of a personal nature, and is mainly related to the Truman and Wallace families. Included are Christmas greetings, thank-you notes, and meeting notes from club activities that Wallace took part in.

In addition to the above items, there is an extensive collection of newspaper clippings and printed materials relating to the Truman family. The clippings are mostly comprised of local coverage of Bess Truman’s funeral, as well as articles on Harry and Margaret Truman. Included among the printed materials are copies of programs from the Inaugural events of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, and information on banquets and events in which the Truman family took part.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of David F. Wallace and Helen Wallace.
